DISINFECTION COMPARISONS

Chlorine is not an adequate disinfectant under certain conditions.  When the pH in a body of water gets high chlorine becomes ineffective.  In addition, when using chlorine it is difficult to maintain a residual of 1.0 to 3.0 ppm (parts per million) in the water.  The effective chlorine in a body of water can be almost totally depleted in a few hours.  Also, with the use of chlorine there is a significant increase in irritation of the eyes, ears, and skin.

In conclusion, chlorine itself is not doing a satisfactory job in protecting the health of the public.
